How To Hire A Professional Paint Contractor

5 Things To Look For

  1. Check References - Ask for a list of several customers that he has painted for in the past few months.
  2. Make sure that he has liability insurance and/or workers compensation. This is to protect you, the home owner.
  3. Get a signed list of everything that he intends to do. Make sure it is in order of what is to be done, i.e.: scraping/washing, 1 coat of primer, 2 coats finish - Remember: No communication is bad for you and your painter.
  4. If you want quality products used - make sure you get it!
Get a list from your painter of how much you need and go to the paint store and buy it! That way, you know what you are getting.
  5. Finally, and most importantly, never give any money up front! No matter what the reason for needing it, a dependable and reputable painter has open accounts at any store and should need no money down to start your job. If it is a 2-3 week job, a reasonable draw at the end of each week could be acceptable, but if they insist on money to start - I suggest you insist they start somewhere else!
